can I buy a tmobile prepaid phone and just use the sim card for another phone?

I have a t-mobile sidekick lx and want to use it as a prepaid phone, I need a sim card and just wanted to know if I go and buy a cheap prepaid phone and then just take the sim card from that and use it in my sidekick.
I know I can buy a sim card online from t-mobile but do not have a debit card to buy it so that is why I am trying to do it this way.
