Can i buy a pay as you go phone and replace the sim card or would i have to buy...

...just the handset? I lost my phone recently, and looking at prices, it's much cheaper to buy a pay as you go phone than just a handset on its own. Is it possible to just buy the pay as you go phone and replace the sim card that comes with it or would there be some sort of block on other sim cards? Thanks!!
by the way, my sim card now is a pay monthly contract if that makes a difference!
 
as long as you buy a pay as u go phone on the same network as your sim card now then it will work straight away no problem. its only if u buy one on a different network u will be blocked and have to get the phone unlocked
