Can I buy a Palm Pre without a service plan and hack it so that I can use it

like an iPod Touch just on wifi? I want to get a Palm Pre to mess with, but I already have a phone and can't really afford the data plan for the Pre at the moment. I want to know if I can "unlock" a Sprint Pre and just use it on wi-fi.
