can i buy a hotshoe for external flash that works with canon rebel xsi?

Can you maybe add a little information? It sounds like you are putting a non-Canon flash in the hotshoe, and it is not firing when you take a picture. Is that correct?

my canon xsi doesnt recognize my external flash. I dont want to use the speedilite. Any ideas?
