Can I be charged for not paying my catologue if the bill is for returned items?

I have been charged for items on my statement but returned them the day after the statement was drawn. The statement asks me for a minimum payment but when they process the returned goods I will have a zero balance. I don't really want to pay them and be in credit but I do not want a strike on my credit rating and a £12 missed payment charge.
I know ethicly they should not be able to charge me but it doesn't always work that way!
This is a UK catologue so UK relevant answers appreciated!
