Can having a WPA key on your internet mess with wireless connections?

I was sharing internet with my mother and stepfather using wireless from a router in their room to broadcast video gameplay through JustinTV. Recently my brother moved in an added his own computer that uses the same router. He told my mother to add a WPA key so that the internet would be faster and no one would be using our internet other than us. But after she did, I now notice that the internet keeps disconnecting once and awhile and I have to wait a few seconds before I can reconnect.

The signal from the router is always high, but it wont let me reconnect right away. And when I tried to broadcast video gameplay the night she added the WPA , the disconnection happened every 8 minutes or so.

Can having a WPA Key somehow interfere with the internet connection. I'm thinking it might be a mix of the password and the broadcasting site that messes things up. Because both my brother and I use that site to watch broadcasts and he also has disconnections sometimes.
