Can God speak for himself, or do we just have to rely on the words of men?

Man made god up in a story and if you cannot figure that out then may your god stomp on your head .

I asked a pastor this and he refer-ed me to the bible, but the bible has names for every book that refers to the men who wrote the words, so can't god just speak to me directly or should I just follow whatever men says god wants?
