I was looking to invest in a killer home theatre setup. Surround sound isn't exactly a priority; bass is. I want a good system that has killer bass, like chest-pounding, wall-shaking deep kicking bass that sounds truly amazing and then some. I was thinking of getting a Klipsch Reference system but I also thought of an idea to invest in a few Sony Xplod 12" subwoofers, some 6x9 speakers and a few 4x3s. I was planning on making 2 big towers with one sub, two 6x9s and one 4x3 per tower. And for the surround channels, one 6x9 and one 4x3 per speaker and two 6x9s for the center channel. If I re-wired these speakers to work with a home theatre amplifier, could I get good sound? I know a little about impendance and handling power. My question is, could I get killer sound from this kind of setup with 100% custom speaker boxes (given I make the boxes a good size and proportion to sound good) or would I be better off going with the Klipsch Reference? I'm also looking for a setup with high excursion that won't compromise bass output even if I take the system to capacity? If I buy the Klipsch Reference system and a powerful amplifier for the setup, would there be a chance of blowing my drivers if I take the system to capacity, or are the Reference speakers made with enough excursion where they won't even come close to blowing if I turn them up loud? I'm just wondering because I want to invest in a system that will last me a real long time and that will sound real wicked. And you know how Peavey makes massive speakers, subwoofers, monitors and PA systems for live audio? What if I bought two big Peavey loudspeakers and smaller speakers for surround and center channels along with a big 15" sub and find a way to connect them all to a normal home theatre amplifier, would this work? Or would the impendance of the loudspeakers exceed the maximum of the amp? I know a lot of amps can handle 8-16 ohms, but I was wondering if live audio had a higher impendance like 32 since they are meant to be cranked up loud for live concerts? I'm just wondering what my absolute best bet would be for a killer setup, all the while using a home theatre amp so I have all the inputs available for a TV, game console, computer, iPod, etc. What's your take on this? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!
