Can bike riding make you run faster?

Ok, so last year I was slow. And I mean almost lineman slow, like the fast of the slow. I was put as a lineman, and I'm not even a big guy, I wasn't really even that tall, and I wasn't fat. But I guess I was strong enough to be starting lineman.
Well anyways, this season I've been riding my bike alot more, for cardio and speed while running, and to get to practice so I won't be a lazy bastard like everyone else who takes a car. I wanna be healthy, so I ride my bike almost everywhere.
Well this year when we did the 40, to see how fast everyone is, I was in the front, and there are fast people in the front. Like I was a little behind the fastest player on the team. Anyways I REALLY surprised myself (and everyone else too), and was even put into the fast group. The fast group means alot.
However, I don't understand, like at all, how I got so fast.
Like last year, my friend Devon (he's a WR), smoked me on the 40, and was obviously faster then me everywhere.
However this year, I beat him BAD on the 40, and he didn't make the fast group.
I say it was from riding my bike alot, but he says it could't be because the work different muscles. He said it was was because I got taller, which I don't agree with, AT ALL. I was taller then him last year, and I still am, but now I'm faster.
Will anyone tell me how I got so fast?
Btw, I don't run, or jog. That kills my joints. I'm a bike rider all the way.
