Hi, I'm a college freshman at Brandeis University finishing up my first year of pre-med. I've been figuring out my summer and I want to do something that will both interest me personally and help with admission to a competative Med School, and I settled on becoming an EMT. It seems to me like a great idea- it would give me tons of experience in the world of medicine and in staying calm under pressure, and it also seems like a valuable life skill in any case. However, one of my friends in med school now told me that he heard from admissions that it's actually a DISADVANTAGE to be an EMT, since med schools think that they'll have to re-train you away from emergency care since EMTs learn how to do life support, not how to treat. Has anyone else ever heard this theory? I'm interested in becoming an EMT for multiple reasons, but not if it's going to hurt my application or make absolutely no difference...any suggestions?
