This is for use in the UK.
I know nothing about camper vans so hoped I could get some tips in the right direction asking this question.
I need a fair sized van to transport and sleep 2 people and some BIG dogs around the country. I dont want to crate the dogs so am considering taking out some of the seating to make large pens for them.
It needs to be economical, reliable and able to cope with some rough roads without bankrupting me to purchase.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
I think I may actually mean 'motor home', I did say I knew nothing about them!!

I used to travel in a vw camper van. It required a lot of attention but was worth it as there was never any repair that cost more than a few bucks.
If you go this route here are some tips

Keep an extra distributer cap, rotor, points, generator belt, shims for the generator pulley, generator pulley, spark plug wrench,

Check your timing and valve lash daily. This is easy. You make a static timing light out of some wire, two alligator clips and a domelight lightbulb.
Check your valve lash with a feeler guage and adjust.
Have something to catch the oil that comes out when you open the valve covers.

all of this is available in the book, "how to keep your volkswagen alive for the complete idiot" by john muir, god rest his soul.

make sure yoou get a van that has the upright engine, not a westfalia pancaked engine.

also double check the steering components up front and replace before your trek! I had a link break on the downhill in santa barbara california. It was a near death experience. But god watches out for volkswagen owners. Pray daily.

Most importantly...Enjoy!

Oh! I almost forgot! If you toast a wire inside your generator, you can get it open and reroute the wire to the outside terminal and hook it on there. Then push start and your off again.

well what ever you get it must be a diesel for economy, there are so many makes to choose from but the best diesel engine by far is the Peugeot .
