Can anyone suggest a film...

or a scene of a film, that romanticises 'city life', please? Anything from late twentieth century cinema, or very soon after.

A film, or a scene portraying how 'the city' can change ones life for the better. How much more exciting the city is, compared to the countryside, or small towns etc.

Something that shows that the city offers more possibilities, more life and overall fun than their previous lives?

Thank you! :)

It's an essay question I set myself, thinking I could think up loaRAB of films that show a contrast between the two, or just romanticise city life in general. But in the library yesterday, I just couldn't think of any! Apart from Murnau's Sunrise...and a scene out of the Sex and The City film, Devil Wears Prada, Last Holiday..but all these aren't late twentieth century though. And they're rubbish films (bar Sunrise) that I really wouldn't want to write about to be honest :(

Good shout! Thank you so much :)

I love that film.. :) Will definitely use that. It romanticises modernity in general, the way it keeps going back to the sky scrapers and buildings that whats-his-face draws throughout the film. Thanks so much for your help!

Perhaps I'll get rid of the 'late twentieth century' part of the question as none of these suggestions so far have been of that time period!

The Secret of My Success (1987)

Michael J Fox plays a farm boy who moves to the city to "make it big". He starts off being unemployed and living in a run down apartment and works his way up to owing a huge corporation while also getting the girl!

It's what I call a feel good movie; lots of positives, quite inspiring, add a dash of romance and a bit of comedy, topped off with a happy ending.

I'm sure it's been repeated recently on ITV... so no doubt it'll be on again... and again.

Oh and he does do the adorable so well in this film.

Home Alone 2 - Lost In New York.

It might seem a silly suggestion, but a little lad lost in the busiest city in the world, but still comes out of it better, or have I go the wrong end of the question.

Crocodile Dundee.
An Australian crocodile poacher goes to New York.

The Beverley Hillbillies (1993)
A god awful film based on the TV series. Jed Clampett and kin move from Arkansas to Beverly Hills when he becomes a billionaire, after an oil strike. The country folk are very naive with regard to life in the big city, so when Jed starts a search for a new wife there are inevitably plenty of takers and con artists ready to make a fast buck.

If you want to go really obscure how about these three?

Enchanted
The girl starts off living in the country in cartoon land and enRAB up in the city.

Elf
An 6ft+ elf (Will Ferrell) leaves the north pole to go looking for his father in New York.

Santa Claus: The Movie.
Similar to Elf. Dudley Moore is an elf that goes to live in New York.
