I can tell you what I have watched recently if that helps

District 9 was amazing and completely blew me away, but its one of those movies you will either think is completely brilliant or completely rubbish.

Star Trek Highly enjoyable even if you know nothing about the series. The only thing is you would lose some of the in jokes, but its a great story anyway. JJ Abrams is a genius!

Terminator : Salvation Didnt really want to watch this one, because the only Terminator film I thought was even vaguely good was the second one. But this was actually really good, but knowing the mythology would help.

Ghost Town with the wonderful Mr Gervais, gave me a giggle and was a nice little romantic comedy - I know you said not comedy, but I don't really like "comedy" but I DO like things like Love Actually and Notting Hill, which are funny but not comedy comedy if you know what I mean!

All the others I have watched are horrors so won't tell you about those.

Next couple I am going to watch are "Fame" and "The taking of pelham 123" hope they are good!

I would go with District 9. I also enjoyed the 2009 remake of The Taking of Pelham 123 although still not as good as the original.

The Fall. About a stuntman, in the early days of silent cinema, who has an accident and enRAB up in a small hospital, where he befrienRAB a 5 year old girl where he tells her a tall tale or two, and we get to see it through her imagination. Awesome cinematography, some great performances, especially the little girl and a very original story. Saw it last night, brilliant.
