Can anyone imagine jailing of an innocent person in return for bribe?

To elaborate, I know of a person who was forwarded to court by corrupt police officers of a police station in India. The person had personal problem with the complaint. The complaint used his connection to influence the police, paid them bribe and managed to file a false case. The so called accused was arrested by police and sent to court with a forward memo containing all sort of vicious lies against him, without conducting inquiry or investigation of any sort. The court accepted the police statement as sacred and found no reason to bail out the accused. The poor person had to spend lot many days in jail before he was given bail by another court at great difficulty.
Everybody knows these things are common in India. But are there other countries too where police and judiciary are equally corrupt?
