How many friends do you have? Preserving history is a numbers game. Do you have ten friends. Well now you need a hundred friends and each of them must make a hundred friends and all of these friends must share your goal. One of the best ways to go about saving a local landmark is to start a group, call it, Friends of Such & Such Airport and map out and make a mission statement. Though politcians are venal self serving creatures they are important and must be cultivated. Track down the council member for the district, the state senator, everyone in the food chain but be wary, did I mention that politicians are venal self serving creatures (?), they might hijack your project so you must make yourself the likable and indispensible man who no one would ever want to cop a squat upon.
It would also be good to hunt down ownership of the site via the local tax office. Gonna throw a few links at you, you would be best advised to contact various preservation groups for their sage advice.
For what it is worth I feel this is a worthy project and you are to be commended!!
