I remember keeping a white fuzzy caterpillar that eventually turned into a white butterfly with vertical red stripes along a fuzzy body. I found the caterpillar on a peppermint plant that I brought home from a nursery in New Jersey, so it could come from that area OR from wherever that nursery got its plants.
I think the caterpillar either started out brown or turned brown before making its cocoon. Also, the plant was kept outdoors, so they could be separate species... But the cocoon was open the morning the butterfly appeared on the plant. The butterfly was (I think) no more than an inch long in any direction, even with its wings spread.
I can't use the online identification sites because all they ask for is the color and patterns and shape of the wings, and I really don't remember anything about those other than that they were mostly white.
