Totally disregard anyone's opinion who "likes" or "hates" Harley Davidson. If it is the bike YOU want, buy it. They are as reliable as anything else. Make sure it is in good shape and has been maintained properly, (as you should with any used bike). Also make sure there is a good dealer or independant shop nearby, whatever you buy.

Although I'm not a fan of H-D, but I don't let prejudice get in the way of the truth, either. I don't know what planet Bob is talking about, but here on planet Earth, the Harley Davidson Sportster has been known for "years" by mechanics as a very well handling, solid, reliable motorcycle. Well balanced, low center of gravity with nice rake. The horsepower might be on the lower range, but excellent torque, which means the machine "pulls" like crazy, remember, they are not designed to be fast, but make a very good over the road bike for 1 or 2 up riding. They are a little vibratey, but not to the point of annoying and easily overcome once used to. My advice is to ask someone who actually "owns" one for info, and not listen to the advice or opinions of someone who has clocked a mere" 80 Miles" and thinks they can form an opinion.

the sporty is designed as about town, light to light ride. Its NOT a highway machine. They are reliable but underpowered. Especially the 883. A 600 C.C. in line 4 sport bike makes a little over 100 H.P. and an 883 makes about 50 I think. And yes if it brakes it will be costly but so will any jap bike. None of them are cheap tp repair anymore.

The sportster is a solid reliable machine. period. It is more costly than most and does not make the power than most bikes but it will still be running long after the jap bikes have gone to the crusher. period. (that makes the total cost of maintenance lower). The problem? You really gotta WANT to ride a sporty. Like Adam says, its not a highway bike. It is considered the entry level Harley....there's a reason its been made since the 50's. How many Honda's are STILL in production from then? THATS why the sportster, with all its "faults" is worth every freaking nickel...

Do not believe one single word from the bashers, trashers and mental midgets that talk about fashion and performance. If they knew anything about it they would know its not about going 180 and its not about image.... never has been.

-bob just needs to take his nuts out of his wife's purse....and man up.
