In the novel Tomorrow When the War Began, by John Marsden a character who is interesting is Ellie. Ellie is interesting because of her narrative point of view and actions. John Marsden creates this interest through having Ellie play a main role in the novel. She is not afraid to show her feelings through her narrative point of view and acts with initiative and confidence. Tomorrow when the war began is the story of Australian teenagers who find themselves in the midst of war.
Describe character physical appearance and personality Ellie is the main character and narrator of this novel. She lives on a farm outside of Wirrawee and loves being a ‘rural’ as she has developed many important life skills from living on a farm. Ellie shows leadership and strong initiative throughout the novel. She is popular amongst her group of friends because she is sociable and confident. Ellie is an outspoken character who takes action and shows her feelings and personality through her narrative point of view.
Why interesting 1 narrative point of view The writer, John Marsden, created interest in Ellie through her narrative point of view. Ellie works through many of her conflicting emotions through the process of writing the story. She is prepared to reveal her feelings about the things that affect her. Ellie’s narrative point of view is interesting because she is honest about how certain events affect her. ’’We’ve all had to rewrite the scripts of our lives the last few weeks. We’ve learnt a lot and we’ve had to figure out what’s important, what really matters. It’s been quite a time’’. As the result of her action she must deal with the fact that she has killed four soldiers. ‘It was hard for me to believe that I, plain old Ellie, nothing special about me, middle of the road in every way, had just killed three people.’ An example of Ellie acting with confidence is in her relationship with Lee. When she becomes certain of her feelings for Lee she initiates their first kiss and, with confidence, takes their relationship to the next level. Ellie’s actions are crucial to the storyline and are a focal point for the interest of the novel.
