Can anyone explain DNA?

I was watching CSI and they obviously talk about DNA a lot. i was just wondering though how the DNA works when matching relatives. Like how many DNA markers does and mother and daughter/son have in common or siblings or father and daughter/son. it always confuses me so any help would be grateful.

DNA- Deoxyribonucleic Acid.
This is a thing in you that the investigating people have to get from any thing like blood to know if that person did something bad..like in CSI
