There is no law for this in Indiana. Indiana's landlord/tenant laws are VERY open. The landlord is allowed to decide who lives in their apartments, and they want the background checks to be sure the person is going to fit into the community.

It is common practice for lowlifes to find a friend or family member to get an apartment, then move in, bringing their drugs, obnoxious friends, and loud music with them.

I'm not saying that is the case here, but it is why the landlord is checking up on the new tenant.

agreement in Indiana? Times are hard. I have allowed my working adult child to move in with me to save both of us money. The landlord says he would be under no legal obligation concerning the lease or rent, but he would be able to access lockout services, etc. Then they gave me an application more intrusive than the one used to sign my lease!
I don't object to paying the application fee or background check, but if he is not going to be financially responsible why so much invasion of privacy?
