For my World History course in high school, I have a one hundred point assignment concerning Imperialism called the "Visual Essay". The objective is to create an understanding of the discussions our class has had about Imperialism, the past or the present, I am supposed to do this assignment visually and the viewer should walk away with a better understanding of the effects of imperialism. I am supposed to have a precise thesis and my creativity is unlimited. In our course we have studied Imperialism through the cases of India, Japan, China and Africa. I have a great understanding of Imperialism, but I am having trouble explaining my views in a practical manner. I tend to think to broad and end up with these ideas that would be impossible to replicate in a 3 foot by 2 foot sculpture.
I have some ideas for possible sculptures and one theses idea, but I would really appreciate it if you helped me modify these ideas or offered new ideas for my visual essay.
Thesis Idea 1: Although the natives were able to survive without imperialism, once they were introduced to new European cultures, the raised standard of living made the natives feel dependent on the support of the Europeans. (I have no idea how to show this!)
Visual Idea: Have the body of a man who symbolizes the country that was affected by Imperialism. The Brain would show British ideals and education. I would have the legs of the man symbolize industrialization which would run the country. The stomach might show what the imperial country had to endure etc. However the bones of the man would be disconnected and symbolize the resistance to change for the nation being taken over and the heart would show the original culture of the nation enduring change. With this I could include important aspects of imperialism and show that you can dominate a country, but the peoples heart (culture) will always prevail and will always take back whats theirs.
So do you guys have any ideas for thesis's and visualizations? This project is due Thursday and I have by no means last minuted it. I am not asking for you to do my homework, just for some feedback and suggestions! I have put allot of thought into this, but I really am thinking to big, and I thank you for even taking the time to read this!
