Can an old Nintendo DS play new DS games?

Like the first version to come out in 2004, that's what I'm talking about. It has both a GBA port and a Nintendo DS game port.

Anyway, can it play the new games, or do I have to buy a Nintendo DS Lite to play those?

You can still use an original DS to play newer games. I don't think there are any DSi exclusive games (yet).
