Can a stock Ford 289 cid motor from a 1968 Mustang be converted over to a HiPo 289.

yes. the 289 hypo was not a special block it was just a factory warmed over 289. it had a performance cam, 4 brl carb, higher flowing heads and exhaust. it had a duel point distributer as well. the boss 302 used 351 cleavland heads which were to say the least drasticly larger ports and flow designed. they also had canted valves the valve sizes from a 289 head and a cleavland were just over the size of a quarter to a half dollar on the cleavland. I built a 289 for my 1977 cobra II in the early 80's to replace the 302 engine I blew up. I read up on all the specs carroll shelby used for his 289's and just stepped up a fraction on the cam and used an edelbrock intake and holly 650doublepumper carb. the engine was ballanced, ported, heads port aligned, slightly higher compression than shelbys engine, hooker headers. the stock electronic ignition worked well from the 302 so I retained it. my trans was a c4 with a comp shift kit. the rear end was the 8 inch it came with but was geared different. it was a rocket!
