We took our car in to have our annual vehicle inspection and when we got the car back we immediately noticed that the gas gauge had flipped over and was now below E. This is a 2006 Nissan Maxima with 36k miles on it. My wife drives and and it's in very good shape. I had noticed the meter was fine before they changed the oil and did the state inspection. They claim they are not at fault and cannot prove we did not bring it in damaged. They did agree to fix it free of charge except for parts, which will be about $210. What are the laws concerning this? Could their mechanics or machines have damaged our car? Obviously something happened there. I currently gross $150k a year so it isn't the end of the world but I wonder if I'm being scammed. Thanks.
I shouldn't have put my salary. It doesn't matter what I make. If the person is breaking cars through incompetence or however, he deserves to pay the penalty so he will stop breaking cars. This should have been a routine smog inspection.
