Can a person in your environment change who you are as a person?

I am doing research on a person from a story. The question to the story asked 'can the environment you live in or the people you are around change who you are?' I know that the environment can change you in many ways. But I'm not really sure about people? Can anybody help me out a little.

I think in some cases people can influence another person. Take children for example. They learn by the people around them. This is most common in schools where kids just want to fit in by mouthing off or being a bully.
Home life can have a deep impact as well. A child who is abused by their mother/father will most likely grow up to be abusers themselves.
Hope I helped.

EDIT: Yes I agree that we can make our own choices, but what about a child? if they live in a bad environment they don't know it's bad therefore they won't change until they reach adulthood. Even then it isn't certain. It's a proven fact that abusers have been abuse victims themselves. How can you change something you don't see a problem with? Just my opinion.

how about gangs; how about bonnie and clyde, how about women who get into abusive marriages and allow it to happen; how about a sorority or fraternity; how about a private school; how about those religions where mind control occurs and the entire group commits suicide together; how about prison?

I believe that someone in your environment can influence you in negative or positive ways, BUT it is you who truly makes you who you are. Most peoples personalities are developed by the time they are 3, believe it or not we have the fundamentals and characteristics that make up a personality when we are children, it is ultimately up to us to decide whether or not we make the right choices in life, and it is up to us to become who we are truly meant to become, regardless of other peoples inputs.

People are part of the environment. People shape the environment we live in, thus we are shaping each other. There isn't a thing a person does or say, that we hear, that doesn't affect us in one way or another. We are shaped by our senses and that is the things we see, hear, touch, feel, smell or taste. If we see a horrific crime, it changes how we percieve that type of person or character. If we hear thunder and lightning at night we get scared and fear the dark. if we are physically abused we are changed by violence. If we smell a bad stinch we tend not to go near it. If we taste something and it makes us sick we vere away from it. Everything we are exposed to affects us in one way or another.
Some things and people are more aggresive in nature and have a deaper impact on the environment, than any other stimuli we may be exposed to in life. As far as people are concerned, a prime example is Adolf Hitler. If any person in the history of mankind as we know it has had an impact on the entire world its that man. Research his life and the things he did and you will find your answer.
