a law degree yes, some inmate graduate and get other degrees in prison. but to be a lawyer no, you can't take a bar exam if you've been found guilty of a crime. but if his case is still for hearing or his case has not been decided yet / no court decision / for appeal, he can take the bar exam

Yes they can i've actually visited and toured a prison with my high school problems of democracy class the inmates gave us a tour and told us yes

Yes, they can get a law degree. In some States - including mine - there are even State accredited correspondence law schools that award a degree that entitles you to sit the Bar in that State.

BUT.... someone who studies for the JD and Bar exam in prison is very unlikely to pass the Bars character test and be admitted to the practice of law.

There is at least one lawyer I know of in CA who did so, but his case is unusual - he became interested in the study of law while assisting in his own appeals, which were eventually successful and his conviction was overturned. He is now a PD.

It would be possible, theoretically , to get a law degree in prison if one had access to ABA-approved classes. I believe there is at least one approved source available on line. (St Thomas n Florida.) Certainly, it could be easier to get a law degree upon release to study law as well as possible even if formal education is not available.

However, after you get a law degree you need to take the bar exam to become a lawyer. That would have to wait until after release. Given my personal experience with lawyers, I'd say a criminal background is a plus. The ABA, however has it's own take on that. A felony conviction might be a complication.

Yes it is possible to get the law degree however it is almost impossible to pass the bar afterwords which is essential to practice law
