Can a Geiger Counter detect change in radiation coming from wind?

I am creating a series of short films (school project) and the main plot is nuclear warfare. Now, I've looked into Geiger counters (got a real one) and found out that it can pick up background radiation (as long as it isn't over powering the unit) and long story short, a guy, will have the geiger counter, a distance off and while after the "explosion", a he will end up detecting the radiation coming on the prevailing winds (slowly the watcher will hear/see the pops on the GC) what I need to know is it possible for this? (I'm guessing so, what would have to happen is the prevailing winds would push the radiation towards the certain area and then cool down bringing the radiation to earth level) thanks if you can give me any insight!
