Can a employer mandate that an employee stays an extra shift?

First off I work in a residence for people with MR, so I am aware that if someone calls out of work last minute or whatever the case is, I can be mandated to stay and work. My problem is, I work 2-10 but the shifts here are strange, there is a 2-10, a 3 30- 11 30 and a 4-12, there has to be 2 people within the residence at all times. Unfortunately we are not fully staffed and often run the shift with just a 2-10 and a 4-12. Even though this is known, that at 10pm there is no one to come in I have been mandated serveral times that I have to stay. Is this legal that basically my boss is leaving the schedule with a gap and then mandating me to stay? I'm talking legality, what are my rights as an employee.
I am in ny.

are you saying that my employer can knowing leave a gap in the schedule and then mandate that I work an extra 2 hours everyday of my shift? I understand that I can leave if I want, but I dont want to have to leave just because my boss is too lazy to fill the shifts.
