My husband + I are considering getting a dog. We've done quite a lot of research + think a cocker spaniel would most suit our lifestyle. One thing we've not been able to find out is whether it would be capable of keeping up with a mountain bike. As a keen mountain biker my husband would like to take the dog out with him for long rides but doesn't want to wear the poor guy out. Anyone got any experience of this?
Thanks

My opinion is that cockers are not ideal for long rides (unless it's paced somewhat slowly.) They are not that big in size so for your cocker to run, it will be overtime for him/her and to have this ride be long! Please reconsider! I have two cockers. One of them is so lazy that he won't run if he can help it (he'll just fast walk lol). The other one has arthritis on his right knee :( and can't run now. Have you thought about labs? They have so much energy and you can run them!

I LOVE COCKER SPANIELS! However, beware that this breed is extremely high maintenance. They need to be groomed and brushed often. You have to flush their ears often. They are extremely excitable and sensitive.

if you are limited to a small dog i would say a cocker spaniel can't really run but all dogs like roller blading. you could easily wear that kind of dog out if biking fast or long rides. a lab is a all round great pet. meduim size dog
