...granny flat? We have owned our property (1 acre) for 20 years. We pay taxes as well as yearly brush removal ($500) to prevent potential fire hazards as the city requires. We decided we wanted to build a granny flat and the city continues to deny our plans that are up to to code claiming we can't because of the easement. We were told this easement was put in place ten years ago with no city notification. I don't understand how we have to pay and maintain this property but can't do any modifications or upgrades to it? Please help. Our neighbors have done many different add-ons with no trouble because apparently the easement is not on their property. P.S. The easement contains no city lines, pipes, nothing its just dirt.

The easement takes up about 2/3 of our property. Right up to the back of our yard. We can pay the city $2000 to speak at a city council meeting. Seems like extortion to me.

Did you get a smoking deal on your property because of the easement? I think that would have been in the disclosure at the time of purchase...that would have made me seriously consider the actual value of the property.
