Can a Blood Test for Pregnancy be accurate within 3 days of ovulation?

I went to my Doctor this week to inquire about getting on some medication. Before I could start they wanted a blood test to check if I was pregnant, as my husband and I have been actively trying for 6 months now. I have been diagnosed with PCOS so I know this is not an easy process.

So I tell my doctor on Thursday that if I am pregnant it probably happened on Monday/Tuesday of this week ( that's when my charting indicated ovulation.) He tells me that a blood test will show positive levels of HCG within 24 hours of CONCEPTION. Everything I have read says it will show within 24 hours of IMPLANTATION, which is 6-10 days AFTER ovulation.

Long story short- is 3 days after ovulation too early to detect the HCG hormone in your experience/research/opinion???

I have started the new meds today, but I am wondering if I should hold off until I have either gotten AF or missed AF.

(Unrelated to the question, but interesting none the less- the nurses 3 of them) apparently read the results WRONG yesterday- called me to tell me I WAS in fact pregnant- then had to call back 2 hours later to correct that my HCG WAS NOT up and I was not pregnant- they had read the TIME on the lab sheet- NOT the level of hormone...made for a long day)
