can a 1969 schwinn continental be a reliable every day commuter bike?

Im trying to find a decent old bike that I can use as a commuter to go back and forth to work every day. I want something that I can get repair parts for and possibly upgrade in the future. Im not trying to be passing cars or anything I just wants something a little more practical than my very heavy mountain bike.
 
A 69 Schwinn isn't worth upgrading.I'd go to a bike shop and look at hybrids if all you want to do is commute.Or you can look on a site like craigslist for a used bike.
