Can 720p TVs play Blu Ray?

I am planning to buy a Blu-Ray player now and a HDTV later.
A friend told me that 1080p will not look much different from 720p. So I plan on buying a 720p HDTV.
Question is, will the 720p HDTV play the Blu-Ray or will it be a waste of money?
Should I wait to buy the Blu-Ray player until after I buy the TV?
