Im going to hike up the mt rose summit in lake tahoe and camp there for a night or two. Im going alone. I dont have the best gear for my trip, but thats why im asking this question on yahoo answers. I have a synthetic sleeping bag (not sure of the rating) that my dad bought when i was baout in 4th grade. Im 23 now. Anyway its a slumberjack, and my dad never really skimped on stuff like that, so i know its decent. It made me sweat in the house last night when i tried sleeping in it. I also have a +40 degree down bag from REI. I was wondering if i would be alright by putting the down bag inside the synthetic one. I know itll be heavy, so dont tell me that. It will probably be in the negatives.

Sure; its similar to the way you layer clothing. And I echo the idea of having another layer between you and the ground or tent floor..that helps a lot. Also wear a stocking cap when you sleep.

Sounds good to me. Two things to think about though would be ground moisture and wind chill. Bring something to place on the ground between you and the dirt. There are foam pads that are sold for that, plastic tends to slide out from under you so leave those sheets alone. What I use for a good windbreaker is a sheet of plastic. Three mil will do but do not leave it behind when you are finished camping. Most people think it does no harm and that it is alright to do so.
Litter in the wild no matter how small or large does do harm.
So ... your sleeping gear seems to be alright just protect yourself from wind and the ground moisture. Sleeping on bare ground can be a damp experience.
All the best and enjoy.
