Camping off the beaten path upstate New York...?

is there any place to camp in the Upsate New York area (Preferrably 2-3 hours from New York City) that you do not have to pay, that is not a tourist attraction site and where you can really just live in the wilderness for two nights. A place where you will be able to set up a small fire and not have State Troopers on your butt. If not, can anyone recommend a good campsite that isn't too touristy and that will give the real wilderness feel?
