Cam shaft went bad on a 2010 pontiac G6?

I just bought a used 2010 Pontiac G6 with 33,000 miles. The other morning it would not start. Thinking it was just a dead battery. I got the jumper caples and tried to jump it. It would at least try to start but still wouldn't start. Had it towed to our local mechanic. He said the alternator went out. Being our car is still under warranty it had to be take to another shop. They called today and said it was a bad Camshaft and they replaced it.
I know nothing about cars, would a bad camshaft cause the car to not want to start? If it does and the camshaft is truely whats wrong with the car. Is that a bad sign for something like that to go out on a 2010 car? So, will I likley see other issues with the car or once it is replaced it should be fine from here on out? Or should we return the car and get something different? Any information would be great
