Cam Project Final Write-Up

I was casually watching this thread over the holidays and forgot about it. I just did the same project and had mostly the same experiences. I opted to remove the rocker box covers and the rocker support plate and use the original pushrods. Don't know why, just not sure I trusted the adjustables. Maybe just wanted to experience more motor. {shrug} Anything it is just as easy. Just more wrenching.

The one thing I wish I had done was not order the cam service kit. It was easy to just order it but I threw out a ton of stuff I didn't need.

I used some oil pump/tappet alignment screws I had from an old 01 Dyna oil pump alignment problem/project. Gave me a little more confidence in the oil pump alignment. Still have a bad tast in my mouth from that one!!!

+1 on the exhaust being a PITFA!!! Lots of four letter words.

Otherwise done in about the same amount of time.

Great write up. Those of you on the fence....you can do this, it is not that hard. If you know basic engine theory and have some mechanical sense....Good easy project.

Well First off, thanks Atrain (for costing me more money) I'm just wondering how it all turned out, we've had some awesome weather up here in Wisconsin so I'm sure that you've had a chance to ride your bike in Ohio, what do you think??

What do I think? I'm thinking what are you waiting for, get some new cams!

I couldn't be happier with the Woods cams. I had a couple PMs asking me the same question and my answer is this. Fuelmoto's dyno tuned Jackpot power package with PC V and SE AC gave me a nice boost. Adding the cams gave me very significant low and midrange power boost. I noticed that I don't have to downshift as much, especially on the highway, because there is plenty of power.

The best way I can explain it is the engine really feels like its opened up and breathing. Would I do it over again? You bet I would.

On a side note I really would like to catch up with someone locally with a stock 96 with SE 255's. Maybe take take turns riding for awhile and then do a write up on the differences between the TW6 and 255.

Eddie, as for costing you more money, that is free of charge!

As luck would have it, Fuel-Moto is in my neighborhood, I drive right by there several times a week so needless to say I have stopped in and talked with Jamie a couple of times this week.
My problem is I have a 2010 Ultra with the cats in the headpipe and to install cams almost demands a headpipe change which will significantly increases the cost. Catalytic converters by nature run hotter than hell and even with changing all the fuel flow I still worry that my slip-ons will be changing colors, even my heat sheilds had some discoloration where it was mis-installed (replaced under warranty). I would love to just throw on my slip-ons and be done with it but one thing leads to another.
PCV, AC, exhaust, cams, push rods, cam install kit, tools for the install, and last but not least a dyno tune...awe$$$$ome! I don't mind spending the money on my bike but this project will cost a small fortune.
Still debating but leaning that way

Eddie, you have this on your mind, it will be ticking back in there all the time you are riding this summer. One less summer you will be alive and riding. Tick Tick. You can do it asap be out of riding for one weekend and enjoy the ehll out of riding the bike with a c;ear consience, JUST DO IT MAN.

Cams are in but still have to adjust the push rods, install air cleaner, power duals, Pcv, and complete the oil change. The snow returned last night so it's all good

Just a heads up on the pushrod adjustment. If you are using the HD tapered adjustable pushrods use 3.5 turns when using the Woods TW6-6 cams. I exchanged emails with Bob Wood and this recommendation came directly from him. This should quiet the valve noise down considerably.

I have a little bit of tapping noise with 2.5 turns but nothing that is bugging me too badly. The valve noise goes away when the engine is fully warmed up. Readjusting to 3.5 turns should be very easy.
