I am 22, 5'11" and 165 pounds. I want to build muscle and was told I need to increase the amount of calories I consume. How much should I take in and what are the best foods to do this so I may be able to build muscle?

Well protein is a great way to build up your muscle tissue but working out and eating some form of protein ABOUT 30 MINS after then it will build up your muscles more. i don't know about calorie count but I'd assume consuming more calories will incease muscle mass.

First off i want to say that we can't tell you the amount of calories you need to take in, because we don't know your regular activities.
Next, if you want to build muscle it is not uncommon people take protein because it is excellent for doing just this. It wont just build muscle so you obviously have to workout with it. Whey protein is okay, but now i realize, why not just eat your own protein. No need for whey really. I would also recommend drinking Cellmass by BSN (it helps the muscles recover faster between workout sessions) or you can drink chocolate milk, as it has similar effects. Go to the BSN website and check out the 'Stack Packs' they are excellent, just make sure you get the things you want.
