everywhere but box? I’ve had my male cat since he was about 6 months old, he’s now about 7 years. For the past two years, he’s been pooping in random places.
First he started pooping on the guest bedroom. We tried:
1)Putting the poop in the litterbox
2)Putting a plastic covering on the bed (he actually just used the plastic covering as litter)
3)Placing him near the poop and giving him a “Bad kitty we do that in the box” speech
4)Buying Feliway Spray and spraying the bed (that was a joke…)
Finally, we tried putting jingly balls around the perimeter of the bed. This stopped him because when he would jump on the bed, the balls would fall and either scare him or let us know he was on the bed and we’d come down before he got to do his business. So, he went in his box for a few months after wards, no problem.
Then he started pooping on my mom's bed (sometimes while she was sleeping in it...). So, we blocked the doors and stopped him from going in the bedrooms. He used the box for a few weeks.
Then he starting pooping right outside the litter box on the rug. We got Enzyme cleaner and scrubbed/cleaned all around his box. The next day he pooped right where I cleaned (slap in my face!) So, I, again, cleaned the area with the Enzyme cleaner, and we got a bigger box for a spare and made a custom box out of a Rubbermaid storage bin and got special Cat Attract litter. Again, he humored us for another few months, and we thought he finally was cured for good, enjoying the custom box and special litter.
Then he starting pooping again in random places, his latest target being the couch. We took him to the vet twice (somewhere in the timeframe between Jingly Balls-and post Cat Attract litter). First time the vet said he was probably doing it on purpose. Second time we had a full set of tests ($500!) done, from blood work to feces sample. He was absolutely, 100% fine from the test results.
So, lately, he’s been meowing LOUD when he’s pooping (which is kind of good ‘cause it’s been alerting us).So, after researching, I thought maybe he’s constipated and meowing in pain, you know? So, I bought Nutro food (supposed to be healthy and has decent fiber) and Petromalt I think it is called (some Vaseline looking thing), as well as high fiber Greenies treats. In other words, I tried a high fiber diet for him.
The first day, he ate about 8 pebbles of the Nutro (but then again he doesn’t eat a lot), so I figured he liked it. He also ate 8 greenies treats, and he made me laugh with the Petromalt… I placed some on his paw for him to lick off and he literally wiped it on the rug, so I had to do it again….
The next day he wouldn’t touch the food or treats (forget the Petromalt, but I’m trying to be consistent with it).
So that’s the story.
His general behavior is he’s very jumpy. If you drop your slipper, or cough loud he’ll jerk his head up and stand to attention. He’s all “bark’ and no bite though.
He used to be a sweetheart kitten, but then we got a female, younger companion to keep him company and he, 6 years later, still hates her guts and makes it a point to hiss at her whenever she passes him by. She’s tough, but she doesn’t care about his hisses unless it’s towards one of us. So, she’s not abusive towards him, but she can put him in his place when he needs it. Anyway, since we brought her home, he hasn’t been the same, he’s been the typical cat that people describe when they hate cats (moody, hisses, red-flag at his vet profile, will try to scratch you sometimes, etc…) But, he went about 4 years with no litter box problems after we got her, so I doubt it’s “her fault”.
My family is getting upset at the excrement all over the house, it smells bad and there is nothing physically wrong with him according to the vet, so we can’t understand why he’s doing it, and I feel like I’ve tried EVERYTHING.
My dad suggested maybe he’s just a little mental (not crazy mental, but that the problem derives from a mental issue like depression or anxiety or just hates us…who knows). My mom has been very sick for the past few years (well she’s always been sick), so maybe he senses something is wrong? But then why would he poop in her bed while she is there?!
Another suggestion was that maybe he’s in heat during these times and is trying to spray… but he got clipped when we first got him, so I don’t think that is possible.
Can anyone suggestion anything (don’t be stupid and say get rid of him, shoot him, kill him… ) or explain why he is doing what he is doing? I hate to think he’s doing it to piss us off…
