Why Rogers?
#1 - GSM.
#2 - I work for Rogers, not Wireless, but Media.

Great company to work for with the best products. (And I'm not just saying that.)

Rogers has always had the best overall coverage in our area and best handsets. Plus we are kind of stuck in a contract

Coverage is currently shoddy at best here. stand in one place and get really good reception and move 10 feet and your fighting for a connection below 100.

I really miss the coverage of Ontario.

Hi, I'm Dee. I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I have a 7290. I chose Rogers because I hate MTS and they are a CDMA network. I have to wait a year until my contract with MTS is done before I can get a data plan with Rogers because I don't want to pay for 2 phones. SO right now, I have my 7290 as a pda/phone because I'm a university student.

~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~hi I'm james living in calgary for the moment - rogers seemed as good as any then I got a bb - does anyone in canada have unlimited download plan ?

Rogers and Telus are both limited to 25 MB.

But it appears that Bell has recently gone from their 25 MB limit to 500 MB, and now to "unlimited".

Considering the telecom sector's approach as being "profitable growth", Bell's unlimited plan falls well outside of this.

I suspect that if either Telus or Rogers changes their pricing on BlackBerry, it will be Telus first. But that is a huge IF.

BlackBerry in Canada is still nearly 100% corporate use. And as long as it is not mostly consumer use, prices will remain high because corporations are not likely to switch providers to save a small amount of money.

(Personal note: it took me 14 months to break the 25 MB limit, and that only happened in the second month of having the 7130g; EDGE pushed me over the...edge.)

Lewis, that is interesting news about Bell. I will have to look at their plans when the time comes that our contract is finally over. I am still new to the Blackberry my first bill is coming at the end of the month so I will see if it is even an issue.

I had a conversation with a Rogers BlackBerry CS person. I asked when they were going to start putting the cost of data plans down to the rest of the world. She couldn't give an answer... I then asked for someone in management at Rogers to call and ask when they are going to do a better plan... She huimmed and hawed an "I can't say" so they like our money but don't like giving a fair amount of service for that money.

I useded 2 MB of data last month... I asked how they can continue to rip us off with data overage fees when the new models of BlackBerrys use huge amounts of data. No answer on that one either...

That is my rant!

Thoughts on a way to get Rogers to improve their data plans for BlackBerrys?

I had a similar conversation yesterday.

And I was also misinformed about Telus, apparently they now have substantially higher data limits.

(I will have to get out of bed and onto my computer to look it up.)

Ok, this is madness! Because my most recent invoice (finally) went over 25 MB, and I literally went from KB every few days to multi MB every day when I got my EDGE 7130g.

Even in the last two days, Bell has since updated their BlackBerry pricing.

So, here's a comparison of the Big-3 (all price plans quoted current as of today, CDN$, per month):

Rogers:

Best Plan:

Data Only: $60 for 25 MB, $7 / MB over limit.

Voice & Data: $90 for 350 day, unlimited evenings & weekends; daytime is 8 am - 8 pm M - F. (Though not listed, for $95, days are shortened, 8 am - 6 pm.)

* The option to mix and match a promotional voice plan with a BB data only plan is available, and may result in finding a "better" deal.
**Rogers EDGE network is nationwide (meaning: urban AND suburban AND rural).

Bell:

Best Plan:

Data Only: $100 for 250 MB, $8 / MB over limit. (Bell also has a $60 plan which is for 30 MB....5 MB better than Rogers!

Voice & Data:

Bundle that BB data with any voice plan, and that 250 MB limit disappears!!!

Best: 1000 daytime, free evenings & weekends, unlimited BB data, $155.
Comparable to Rogers: $100 gets you 500 day minutes (better than Rogers 350), free evenings & weekends, and unlimited BB data (better than Rogers 25 MB).

*Data only plans, though limited to 250 MB, also INCLUDE tethered modem access, which has its own 250 MB limit.
**Voice & Data plans do not offer any tethered modem access.
***EVDO network is severely limited to major urban centres.

Telus:

Best Plan:

Data Only: $100 for 250 MB, BB or tethered modem. $10 / MB over limit.

Voice & Data: $155 provides 1000 daytime minutes, free evenings & weekends, and 25 MB of BB data. $10 / MB over limit.

*Telus plans for Data Only @ $60 / 25 MB, and Voice & Data @ $90 / 350 d/t + free evenings & weekends are identical to Rogers.
**Again, EVDO network is severely limited to major urban centres only.
***Don't be misled by the prices slashed out with the half price...It's a promotion where you only get 3 months at half price of a 36 month contract.

Bottom line is: all of these plans SUCK!

Especially when compared to our American neighbours.

But keep in mind the following:

Rogers has the largest fastest network, and your BlackBerry (or phone) will work just about anywhere on the planet, thanks to GSM.

Bell and Telus both rely on the limited coverage networks of CDMA...Canada, US, and that's about it.

Bell and Telus BB roaming data in the US is charged at $8 / MB, and that's always in addition to your Canada data. (Nearly being misled...because I thought that 1000 KB @ 1

Forgot to mention:

Here's the KICK IN THE PANTS!!!

Fido.

Though Fido doesn't have BlackBerry, they certainly do have a Fido branded BIS!

Now, Fido does have the hiptop. (Is that the same as a sidekick?)

And, this is what galls me: unlimited 'hiptop data' for $20 / month!!!.
