CAlling all mechanics....question on pitman and idler arms!?

Would a person with moderate mechanical ability and a huge assortment of tools be able to change the pitman and idler arms without a lift and the need for a mechanic....I've changed calipers, rototrs, brake pads, intake manifold, before.....My wife is killing meand I have no money....let me know what you think? this is a chevy blazer 4x4 99. Thanks!
 
you need a good puller for the pitman. Don't try torching the old one or you may fail the gear seal. And a good socket set. Some pitmans have other steering components in the way and they need to be dislocated and moved, or if the frame is below it, you may need to use a good wrench or disassemble the gear to frame mounts and then, phuematic power is sweet to rattle on a loose, flopping heavy gear.

The idler may require an extention as well if the mounting bolts are recessed in tube steel framing with access and through bolt holes only. A pickle fork and/or a good heavy sledge to seperate the joints as well.

That;s about it. Just be careful with the pitman to not damage the gear shaft, seal or housing.
 
It's pretty easy. The pittman shaft is tapered, so there is a special puller required. You can borrow that from Autozone.
 
\/\/\/you need and air gun for that ... it is easy i dont think you need to lift it lol for that you can used a BFH bigF***hammer and hit on the side also mark your spots so youll know its on right if not your aligment its goin to be wierd lookin good luck
