California, do i need a helmet to ride a bike on bike lane?

Do i need to wear a helmet if I ride my bike on the bike lane? More importantly will i get a ticket if i don't? what about riding on the side walk?
 
if you are under 18 you need a helmet no matter what or you will get a ticket, but if over 18 only need a helmet if there is a sign at trails or a park
