CAlifornia DMV Driving Test Question? Backing Up?

When taking the driving test at the dmv and they make you back up next to a curb.
Do they let you use your mirrors?
My driving instructor said they don't let you use mirror and when backing up you have to look at the rear windshield.
My mom took the test not too long ago.They let her use mirrors.

So do they let you use mirrors when backing up? or not?
