Cadillac Converter question?

My car gets very little power when hitting the gas. When stopping or coming up a hill the car may lose power or will slowly gain speed. The mechanic said i need a new cadillac converter, i think he said its clogged or something which will make it do that. My neighbor said he can rod it out or something and it will save me around 300 in mechanic fees if i let him do it. My city does not have emissions test btw. SHould i let him do it? is it gonna mess up my car or cause it to stink? thnx for replies
oh btw the guy at advance auto said it sounded like a fuel filter. i replaced it myself with no luck of fixing the problem.

don,t ream it out or it will be the same as a straight pipe and be hard on gas. your better off to get another cat. and if you can,t afford the original 1 then get a universal type.

It will make your car louder. But Catalytic converters do not clog. You have a timing or fuel delivery problem or it needs a tune up including spark plugs.

The converters WILL clog up as I have had it happen to me . Rodding it out will nor effect how it runs except to make it run like it should . Sometimes will change sound and sometimes not . Actually may make car run better . Question is did the mechanic say why he thought it was stopped up ? Just because no exhaust out tail pipe does not mean stopped up convert or . I have seen the inside of the exhaust pipes colapse . One way to find out , is to disconnect exhaust in front of converter and drive it a short distance and see if that solves it .

Catalytic converters can clog but unless you have seen a lot of black smoke coming out of the tailpipe lately it is unlikely. I would have the catalytic converter removed and test drive the vehicle if it has the same problems it is not the converter.
