cable box record function?

have cable box (no dvr) to my tv and my vcr/dvd player hooked up. cable box remote works for everuthing and guides on screen but all of a sudden when i press record it does not do it anymore. i unplug box and waited 10 min and replugged and reset but still remote button not working. last time i recorded was sun day and i have not changed anything since then.
any ideas appreciated
