Cable Box and DVD/VCR connection issues, why am I getting no channels?

Ok I recently got a DVD/VCR combo and I connected it, I followed the directions of connection the cable box to the tv and the cable box to the system (the output section) and recently I tried to record using the VCR function, come to find out I only get Line 1 and Line 2, what went wrong? Am I suppose to use the red, white, yellow cords to hook from the system to the tv or is it something else?
