I still prefer the telescoping mirror because there is no bending over involved. My thought is if you have to bend over, you might end up leaning the bike a bit and in doing so, not getting an entirely accurate read.

About checking coolant, yup, remove the cover.
 
Or, if you are getting up it age, you may experience a head rush and get a bit tipsy:lol4:

I have long, ape-like arms so, I'm not bending down all that much.
 
I just hand tighten mine. I tried that extra little turn bull, and I had to use the ole' srew driver through the filter trick to get it off the next oil change.
