What we learned in school is that we had a Civil War 1861-1865. By some definitions it has been improperly classified as a "civil war" because it was NOT to overthrow any government nor was it <quote> "a war between political factions or regions within the same country". It was a war about States rights to secede from the Union. The CSA was a separate country, but was not recognized by the USA. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/civil%20war
Lincoln lied in his campaign and inaugural address. <quote> On March 4, 1861, Lincoln stated in his inaugural address that "...it was his duty to maintain the Union. He also declared that he had no intention of ending slavery where it existed, or of repealing the Fugitive Slave Law." Lincoln had every intention to free the slaves, but never would have made it to the white house nor obtained congressional support for the war on that platform. Only after the US was embroiled in war did he sign the Emancipation Proclamation. Lincoln also suspended habeas corpus in order to preserve the Union. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/part4/4p2967.html
The American Revolution was over taxation by an unjust entity. The Boston Tea Party was over just one tax. Some will say we have not had a Civil War... Yet.
What say you?
.
"By some definitions". Big Mamma seemed to clarify what I heard. Thanks.
