Hey All,

I am upgrading to a HD receiver and am unsure of whether or not I should buy or rent one from Bell. I haven't decided on if I'll go with the PVR version yet or the regular HD receiver. Also, I am already a subscriber, so I cannot receive the new customer rebates, etc.

Can anyone please inundate me with some pro's and con's of renting vs. buying? Such as, if I rent, is my receiver under warranty for that whole period as opposed to only 1 year if I buy?

If there is a post for this, I apologize. I've been looking for one, but have not had any luck.

Thanks.

take the best deal they offer on rental.

I own a whole bunch of recievers, so i'm stuck with evu forever.....

Except paying for Dish Care isn't free :)

I have had Zero problems with my SD receivers for many years and it was not worth whatever dishcare costs to cover them. My 9200 is a rental (free for 2 years) and I had no outlay charges so it has worked well so far for me.

You say you can still get free HD installation if you already have the second LNF;

Then now you say;

This does not compute.

If the Customer already has the Upgrade Kit he cannot Upgrade again, for free because he already has Nimiq 82 reception.

If this is not correct then when did the new promotion start that offers free installation of your first HD receiver even if you already have 2 LNBF's and an SW21 or Sw44 installed.?

Also true I think I pay 5 or 6 $'s a month for it and for me since I like to own all my receivers its the only way to get full warranty on all things ( dish,lnb's,SW-44's, remotes ect, ect)

But I don't think the rental option is really an option for those of us in "southern provinces". Its not like they can really come and install their box for me?

Otherwise, I agree with all the arguments. DirecTV has moved to the same concept in the US - and with quirks and continual improvement to HD receivers, it seems a sensible thing to do (although they still require a $200 or $300 "upgrade" fee!)

If you are in the "southern Provinces" you have to take your chances and Buy the equipment but I guess you are using a Canadian address for billing so i would imagine that if that address is in a Province where Dish Care is available you should be able to add that to your account.

Might make for fun if you need to return a receiver, Bell would ship replcement receiver to Canadian address, they would ship to your location, you then ship your box to Canadian location, they ship to Bell. Timings would be tight as you only have 10 days to get the dead receiver back to Bell but it should be possible.

I kind of agree with that, but I own a couple other receivers which I am also stuck with, so I'm kind of all in as well. I'm thinking with a rental I'd be spending more in the long run than what I'd pay up front if I bought.
Do the rentals only carry a 1 year warranty as well?

If you already have the second LNBF you could still be eligible for the Nimiq 2 free upgrade promo. How? If you didn't had any programming that requires Nimiq 2 (HD-International-Salt&Light-AOV Movies-Male Flixxx) for a minimum of 6 months. To be able to qualify the promo must be listed in Max Plus, if not the client will have to pay

Proofs?
I had the second LNBF when I bought my 9200. I wanted to catch channel 207 which is on Nimiq 2 and benifited from a promotion where I paid the LNBF upfront, added Variety 3 for 6 months and got 60 or 90$ back. I cancelled the theme pack a while ago, then, in October 2007, bought a 9200. The installer came and installed the 9200 and Sw44 free of charge

OK but that is more of a loophole and not an actual right that exists if you ARE receiving and paying for anything off Nimiq 2. Right.?

rental:
-allways comes with professional installation
-life time warranty for the receiver and 3 months for installation, so if after 3 months you need a service call you have to pay 75.00
-you can upgrade to a superior model

purchase:
-1 year warranty, you can buy dish care which is 6.00/month and covers all the receivers in the account. dish care can not be applied if the incident occurs in the first 15 days
-in general it is good for those that don't go crazy for having the latest version in tech.

If the client currently has Nimiq 2 programming, such as AOV Movies, Male Flixx, International programming, Salt&Light he is NOT ELIGIBLE for the Nimiq 2 free upgrade

If the client has the second LNBF and didn't had Nimiq 2 programming in the last 6 months he COULD BE, if the promo is listed in Max Plus, ELIGIBLE for the Nimiq 2 free upgrade

When renting the HD receiver any warranty issues are covered, even beyond the 1 year timeframe. I had a problem with my unit powering up and I contacted Bell who sent out a replacement unit after some troubleshooting. You may pay more over time but renting will give you the option of upgrading to new technology without the upfront costs.

That you have to pay...
If it's the first HD receiver of the house you might be elegible for the Nimiq 2 free upgarde promo, if not you have to pay

But to do so you will have to pay another rental certificate which is 100$, it will be credited on your first Bell TV bill after you activated the unit. If you place the upgrade request by phone you have to have a credit card. They will immediatly charge the 100$ and tell you it will be credited back 3-6 weeks after you activated the unit. Since the client paid with the credit card, often, they think they will be credited on their credit card, but that's not the case, it's a credit on the Bell TV bill. Unfortunatly there is nothing the agent could do about that, it's Bell TV policies.

The client, if he which to upgrade a rental unit, will also have to p

Thanks for the comments, they are appreciated.
I also think I heard that if you rent a box, Bell has to actually come out and install it as it "their equipment" still, and they want to protect it. Is that true?
As I am already a customer, would I have to pay for this install? If I bought I could easily install on what is already there for free.

Also, if I decide to rent, do I have to go through Bell and order one or can I just go to FS or BB and get a system? I'm thinking I'd have to order through bell and wait?

I could be wrong, but as I recall, there is a limit on the number of receivers covered. I believe it is 4.

If you don't have HD yet, they have a deal on the HD upgrade that includeds discount equipment and programming with a 2 year HD subscription. and free installation.

i think you guys are making a confusion here:

nimiq 2 upgrade means to install the second lnbf on the dish which is required, like I said, for some SD programing, including the international channels and HD programming.

situation no 1: customer x does not have an HDTV, but he is chinese and he wants to listen chinese programming. in order for him to have chinese programming he needs the second lnbf, rght? so he will be elgible to nimiq 2 free upgrade.

situation no 2: the same customer x just purchased a HDTV, he wants to upgrade his receiver to a 9242 to see HD channels, he already had nimiq 2 upgrade, but he is a new HD customer which means that he qualifies for All-in-one offer for existing customers. This offer includes:

--free installation for receiver
--free HDTV programming for 6 months, but he must not have subscribed to HDTV programming in the past 6 months.
--this offer does not apply for purchase of Hd receiver

My roommate has an HD receiver already in his room on my account, so I probably would not qualify, do you think? He bought his about 1 or so year ago.
