Buying dvds/bluray/games from the US?

It seems to me the US get the best products in regarRAB to quality, especially collector's editions, are there any guides, hints, tips for newbies on buying from the US?

Is it simply a case of buying from amazon.com or similar and paying a (hopefully) small fee?

Or is it more complicated with unknown possible costs, and possible playback issues?

PS3 games from the US will play here.
Blurays and dvd's can sometimes be region coded so you need multiregion gear and / or a website that lists region free discs.

DVD's from the Hollywood studios are nearly all region coded but Blurays are usually region free - well , 70% of titles are.

Unless you want to spend

Be careful of customs though when you spend over a certain amount, I got stuck with payment last time I ordered off Amazon.com for one blu-ray and one dvd. Is this common or was I just unlucky?

Tevion is a multi region blu ray I recommend if you don't want to spend a lot, I've had it since the end of last year and not had one single problem with it. Every disc I've played has worked fine(Region A, and B, and Regions 1,2 and 3 mostly on DVD).

Thanks for the advice, the Lost collection looks awesome, what are the shipping charges usually like from amazon, for the Lost collection, and in general just a standard dvd case?

Or just go to a "region hack" website and enter a code on your remote to make your DVD player into a multi-region machine for free !

I've had to pay custom duty. How does it work? Do you get a bill with the delivery? Do they retain the package until the duty has been paid?

Pretty much MOST Blu-Rays are NOT Region Locked, so importing from the US has been fine, just be sure to check on a website or something, NOT AMAZON though, since many Region Free Blu-rays I've bought from them, they've listed as Region A Only. Only a few studios who actually put a lock on their Blu-rays.

PS3 games are ok since the console is Multi-Region on PS3 games, only Region locked on PS1/2 Games, DVD's and Blu-rays.

....except for virtually every Fox release for the first 3 years of Bluray inclduing the Bond films , the Planet of the Apes films ,the Die Hard films ,the Omen films and more.
And Disney releases like Pinocchio ,Sleeping Beauty , Snow White ,every single title on The Criterion Collection ,Lionsgate titles like Basic Instinct ......etc...

There are quite a few

Fair point, not checked any of the Criterion Collection so don't know about them, surprised at the Disney ones since ever other Disney Blu-ray I own is Region Free, must be a Pixar thing?

If you want to check a film, just look Here.

The Disney films I listed are the classic Disneys but the latest Platinum collection release of Beauty and The Beast is region free - so there's no consistency at all.
Not all Pixar films are coded .
IIRC its only brand new films with catalogue titles region free.

The only lable I know of that codes 100% of its titles is The Criterion Collection which is odd because they were one of the few to release major films on dvd region free.
